New Planters Bring a Touch of Green to
Fair Lawn’s Broadway District

Fair Lawn, NJ, June 17, 2010 – The Broadway Improvement Corporation (BIC) has installed 20 new planters outside of businesses on Broadway in Fair Lawn as part of a pilot program to make the district more green and inviting. Combined with lower speed limits, new directional and welcome signs that highlight the Broadway District, plus façade and signage improvement programs coordinated by the BIC, Broadway is getting spruced up to be recognized as a destination for local shoppers and diners as well as visitors from surrounding towns.

Michele Artale, holding Bella, and Karen Brunner of Dazzling Dogs on Broadway, joined BIC President Bob Beshlian for the planter installation.

Each unit is planted with an Alberta Spruce, and commercial property and business owners involved in the program have been encouraged to plant more flowers that will add color and impact. All have signed a pledge to keep the planters free of litter and weeds and to water the plants on a regular basis.

If the program works out well, expect to see more planters installed in the Broadway District, noted BIC President Bob Beshlian. “We are working hard to make Broadway a place that people enjoy visiting by improving streetscape elements like the planters and implementing proactive marketing and promotional efforts. Our efforts on behalf of local business and commercial property owners is designed to reinforce the convenience and welcoming ambiance of the district and to highlight the diverse shopping and dining opportunities on Broadway to local consumers while introducing Broadway to new visitors as well,” he concluded.

Businesses currently participating in the pilot program include Dazzling Dogs on Broadway, JJ’s Pub, Gastroenterology Consultants of North Jersey, Joseph’s Salon, Rinko Orthopedics, Quilly’s Gourmet Sliders, Sexy Nail II, Mane Street, Jack’s Costumes and Upscale Salon. Karen Brunner, who owns Dazzling Dogs on Broadway (24-09 Broadway), noted that she had her own flower buckets in front of the store anyway, so participation in the pilot program was a natural. “Flowers can really brighten up the streetscape,” she added.
